|a THE PRESENT DOCTORAL DISSERTATION AIMS AT GIVING A TOOL TO PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHERS FOR BOTH TEACHING AND ASSESSING (FRENCH) SPELLING. IT OFFERS A VALUATION SET MADE UP OF 10 DICTATIONS, EACH OF THEM COMPRISING 15 ABILITY TESTS, SIMILAR AT ALL 4 LEVELS OF PRIMARY TEACHING WHERE SYNTACTICAL SPELLING AS SUCH IS TAUGHT, VIZ 2ND TO 5TH FORMS. THE QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE DATA DRAWN FROM CHILDREN'S ANSWERS HAVE BEEN THOROUGHLY ANALYSED; THIS LEADS TO A PROPOSAL TOWARDS PROGRESSIVE SCALES OF LEARNING AND EVALUATION, BOTH OF THEM, THOUGH NOT PARALLEL, BEING GEARED TOWARDS A BETTERED PERFORMANCE IN SYNTACTICAL SPELLING.
